Nancy Labov has been working as a nurse in psychiatric and addiction services for more than 25 years. She also has experience as an alcohol and drug counselor, and serving as an EMT. She has always believed in the power of community resourcing and people working together toward a common goal.
As a woman in long-term recovery for over 30 years, she has a passion for recovery and prevention, and recognizes that identification and awareness are key factors. In 2014, the framework for
ALUMNI IN RECOVERY
was founded as a result of her life experience. She began bridging schools with the valuable resource of young people in recovery.

Director of Student Programs
Shayla Heslen is the Director of Student Programs at Alumni in Recovery. As a woman in long term recovery she began volunteering with the organization as a public speaker at many high schools in the area sharing her journey to sobriety.
She is currently seeking her associates degree at Bergen Community College and plans to double major in both psychology and criminal justice. Shayla worked at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center as a Peer Support Coordinator, assisting in creating and planning the new Recovery Center.
Director of Parent Program Board of Directors
Tom is an executive in the media technology industry. He has lived in River Vale, NJ for 20 years, where he and his wife Patti raised their blended family, including sons Evan and Michael and daughter Jessica. In 2015, they lost Tom’s oldest son Christopher, age 29, to a heroin overdose, after several years of struggling with addiction and multiple attempts at rehabilitation.
In an effort to find some meaning in Christopher’s death, Tom was fortunate to discover and participate in
ALUMNI IN RECOVERY.
His family’s experience imparts to others the reality that this danger lives within all communities — as well as building awareness, fighting the stigma surrounding addiction, and providing support to Recovery Members.
